So far, so good. September 27, 2009

First time GPS user. Did much review before purchasing. Am pleased with it, so far. No issues with the volume. Adjusted nicely when "recalculating" when I did not follow the prescribed route. I purposely used some shortcuts to see how it adjusted. It did so flawlessly. Nice bright screen. The lane indicator is a nice feature. The speed limit indicator was pretty acurate. The speech recognition feature worked well. On the negative are things I was aware of - cannot turn the unit off. I just remove the battery, cover the contacts with a piece of plastic wrap, and put the battery back in when not in use so I do not lose it. Also, very limited written instructions. Downloaded & printed out a 72 page instruction manual, which was helpful. Also have utilized some online forums for the Garmin products, which proved helpful. Cannot use the unit when connected to a PC. I recommend purchasing an AC adapter. Overall, I am pleased with the unit, in spite of the few negatives.
DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK GPS September 26, 2009

This GPS turns off by itself when you are using it. The new 4.60 software to fix this problem can't be loaded. You connect the usb cable to the GPS unit and the computer does not even recognize it. In other words how do you update the software when you can't install it into the GPS unit? Complete waste of money. Thought the $199 price on Amazon was a deal but it was $199 down the toilet.
Garmin nuvi 855 September 21, 2009

read many reviews and decided on the Garmin nuvi 855. it offered many features that we didn't see in others - still haven't learned how to use them all. received the unit quickly and started to activate. it took about 3-4 tries at average 4 hours each to get the up-to-date maps loaded (first downloads to computer and then transfers to Garmin).
very happy with unit - selected Garmin talking voice quickly; setup home address quickly; able to get voice recognition going. took a trip to a new place (about 3 hours away) and used Garmin to locate places of interest such as sporting goods stores, malls, etc.
haven't figured all items out. as other reviews commented, the manual is minimal and most learning is hand's on. screen size is great - detail is amazing for size. found games application as well as setting up vehicle look.
this is our first car GPS. have previous experience with a fish-finder but that experience didn't really apply to this unit.
happy with results to date.
